12 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Mattress or Bed Frame
Published 20 October 2026 by Hush My Bed, Birmingham
We spend around a third of our lives in bed, yet most of us keep the same mattress and bed frame far longer than we should. Because a mattress wears out slowly, it is easy to get used to the dip in the middle or the creak when you roll over. In this guide, our bed makers in Birmingham share the 12 most common signs that it is time for a new mattress or bed frame, how long each should last, and what to look for when you replace them.
The quick answer
- Mattress: check it every 7 years; replace sooner if it sags, feels lumpy or you wake up aching
- Bed frame: a well-made frame lasts 10 to 15 years or more; replace it if it creaks, wobbles or the slats are broken or bowed
- Biggest warning sign: you sleep better in a hotel or spare room than in your own bed
- Quick test: lie on your back and slide your hand under your lower back. If there is a big gap, or your hips sink well below your shoulders, your mattress has lost its support
How long should a mattress and bed frame last?
| What | Typical lifespan | What wears out first |
|---|---|---|
| Budget foam or open coil mattress | 4 to 6 years | Foam softens and springs lose tension |
| Pocket sprung mattress | 7 to 10 years | Comfort layers flatten where you sleep |
| Memory foam pocket mattress | 7 to 10 years | Foam slowly loses its bounce-back |
| Flat-pack bed frame | 3 to 7 years | Joints loosen, slats crack, legs snap |
| Solid, reinforced bed frame | 10 to 15+ years | Fabric wear; the frame itself stays strong |
These are general guides. How long yours lasts depends on how well it was made, how it is used and how well it is looked after.
7 signs you need a new mattress
1. You wake up stiff or aching
If your back, neck, hips or shoulders hurt in the morning and the pain eases as the day goes on, your mattress is a likely cause. As a mattress ages it stops holding your spine in a natural line, so your muscles work all night to make up for it. If the pain is severe or does not improve, speak to your doctor.
2. It sags or has a dip where you sleep
A visible dip, or a feeling that you roll towards the middle, means the springs or foam have worn out. Even a dip of 2 to 3cm can affect your posture. Turning or rotating the mattress may help for a while, but once a dip appears it will only get deeper.
3. You can feel lumps or springs
Lumpy fillings or springs you can feel through the top are a sure sign the mattress has reached the end of its life. A good pocket sprung mattress has hundreds or thousands of individually wrapped springs and deep comfort layers, so you should never feel the springs themselves.
4. You sleep better anywhere else
If you sleep more soundly in a hotel, at a friend's house or in your own spare room, your mattress is telling you something. Your bed should be the most comfortable place you sleep.
5. You feel every move your partner makes
Older mattresses, especially open coil ones, pass movement from one side to the other. If you wake every time your partner turns over or gets up, a pocket sprung or memory foam mattress will reduce that disturbance because each spring works on its own.
6. Your allergies are worse at night
Over the years a mattress collects dust mites, dead skin and moisture. If you wake up sneezing, stuffy or with itchy eyes, an old mattress may be making allergies worse. A mattress protector helps, but it will not fix a mattress that is already many years old.
7. It is more than 7 to 8 years old
Even if it looks fine, a mattress you have slept on for 7 years or more has supported you for over 2,500 nights. The UK bed industry recommends checking it at least every 7 years and asking honestly whether it still feels as good as when it was new.
5 signs you need a new bed frame
8. It creaks, squeaks or rattles
Noise usually means loose joints, worn fixings or a frame that is starting to flex. Tightening the bolts may help for a short time, but if the noise keeps coming back, the frame is wearing out. Frames built with heavy-duty bolts and tee nuts, like ours, are made to stay quiet. Read our guide to ottoman beds to find out why.
9. The slats are broken, bowed or too far apart
Lift your mattress and look. Cracked or bent slats, or gaps of more than about 7cm, let your mattress sink in places. This wears the mattress out early and can void its warranty, so a new mattress on a bad base is money wasted.
10. It wobbles or the legs are loose
Screw-in legs are a common weak point on cheap frames. If your bed rocks when you sit on the edge, the joints or legs are failing. Beds that sit directly on the floor with no legs, such as our ottoman storage beds, avoid this problem completely.
11. The ottoman lid is hard to lift or will not stay up
On an ottoman bed, the gas struts that lift the base can weaken after many years. If the base drops when you let go, or it takes a lot of effort to lift, it is either time for new struts or, on an older or poorly made bed, a new bed.
12. Your bed no longer suits your life
A bed does not have to be broken to need replacing. Maybe you need more storage, a bigger size for two, a lower bed that is easier to get in and out of, or simply a style you love. Our small bedroom ideas and storage bed comparison can help you decide.
Mattress or bed frame: which is the problem?
Not sure which one is letting you down? Try these simple checks.
- Put the mattress on the floor for a night. If it feels much better, your frame or slats are the problem. If it still sags or feels lumpy, it is the mattress.
- Look under the mattress. Check for broken, bowed or missing slats and a sagging centre support.
- Listen. Creaks from the corners or joints point to the frame. Twanging or crunching from inside the mattress points to worn springs.
- Check the age of both. If your mattress is over 7 years old and your frame is wobbly, replacing both together is often the best value.
What to look for when you replace them
Choosing a new mattress
- Pocket springs: each spring moves on its own, giving better support and less partner disturbance than open coil.
- Memory foam layers: mould to your shape and ease pressure on shoulders and hips, which suits side sleepers.
- The right firmness: medium-firm suits most people, especially back sleepers.
- The right size: check our UK bed sizes guide before you buy.
Popular choices include the Allure Memory Foam 1000 Pocket Sprung, the Reverie Memory Foam 2000 Pocket and the pillow top Mirielle Memory Foam 3000 Pocket.
Choosing a new bed frame
- A strong frame: look for steel reinforcement and solid joints, not just staples and glue.
- Close, sprung slats: they support your mattress evenly and help it last longer.
- No screw-in legs: a bed that sits on the floor will not wobble or snap a leg.
- Storage: an ottoman bed gives you the whole space under the mattress for duvets, suitcases and seasonal clothes.
- Made in the UK: a handmade British bed can be built to order in your size, height and fabric.
Why our beds are built to last

Our ottoman beds are triple-reinforced with heavy-duty steel bars, sit directly on the floor with no legs, and have a solid storage base and sprung slats. They are made to stay strong and quiet for many years. Read more about why a reinforced frame matters and why handcrafted British beds outlast mass-produced frames.
How to make your next mattress and bed last longer
- Rotate your mattress head to foot every few months, and turn it if it is two-sided.
- Use a mattress protector to keep out spills, sweat and dust mites.
- Air your bed by pulling back the covers for a while each morning.
- Do not sit on the same edge every day, as this wears the edge down.
- Check the bolts on your frame once or twice a year and tighten them if needed.
- Do not let children jump on the bed. It is the quickest way to damage springs and slats.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you replace a mattress?
The UK bed industry suggests checking your mattress every 7 years. A good pocket sprung or memory foam mattress can last longer, but if it sags, feels lumpy or you wake up aching, it is time to replace it, whatever its age.
How long does a bed frame last?
A well-made bed frame can last 10 to 15 years or more. Cheap flat-pack frames with thin slats and screw-in legs often creak, sag or break much sooner. A solid, reinforced frame with good joints and bolts should stay quiet and stable for many years.
Can a bad bed frame ruin a new mattress?
Yes. Broken, bowed or widely spaced slats let a mattress sink in places, which wears it out unevenly and can void the mattress warranty. Always check the frame before putting a new mattress on it.
Why do I wake up with back pain?
A common cause is a mattress that has lost its support, so your spine is not kept in a natural line while you sleep. If your back pain is worse in the morning and eases as the day goes on, your mattress may be to blame. See a doctor if the pain is severe or does not improve.
Should I replace my bed and mattress at the same time?
It is not always necessary, but it often makes sense. A new mattress on a tired, creaking frame will not perform at its best, and buying both together means you can make sure the size and height work well.
What should I do with my old mattress?
Most UK councils offer a bulky waste collection for mattresses and bed frames, usually for a small fee. Many local recycling centres also accept them. Check your council website for details.
